Announcing the Endless Tech for Good Fellowship with Global Citizen Year

For the past ten years, nearly a thousand students have fanned out across the world, traveling to communities in Ecuador, Brazil, India, and Senegal for a life-changing gap year. Global Citizen Year gives students in the pivotal year between high school and college a deep dive experience in a new culture, apprentices supporting efforts in education, healthcare, and the environment, and new language immersion.

This year, as part of a two-year pilot with Endless, the opportunities available to the young people participating in a Global Citizen Year will include Science, Technology, Engineering and Math as part of the Endless Tech for Good Fellowship. The goal of the newly launched curriculum, which students can opt into, is to give fellows the opportunity to explore the complex relationship between technology, poverty and development and learn how to use technology to drive positive social impact on a global scale.

Global Citizen Year was launched by Abby Falik in 2010 with the goal to give recent high school graduates a global experience that builds curiosity, conviction and courage, and positions students for leadership roles across sectors so alums can “reshape policies to advance social mobility, re-engage America in the world, and drive solutions that create a more just, peaceful and sustainable world.”

“There’s never been a more urgent need,” says Abby Falik, “to ensure that our next gen leaders are prepared to use technology to drive positive social impact on a global scale.  We are thrilled about the opportunity to partner with Endless to launch an experience that will attract rising STEM stars, and provide them with a transformative learning experience before college where they live and work alongside the global majority. Through first-hand exposure to the complex relationship between technology, poverty and development, our new Tech for Good Fellows will learn the difference between feel good and real good, and will arrive on college campuses prepared to declare not just a major, but a mission.”

The second class of fifteen Endless Tech for Good Fellows will begin in 2020. Both Endless and Global Citizen Year hope applicants will ask big questions like: How can technology innovations mesh with the opportunities of a community? What part can technology play in supporting a community’s efforts in education or the environment?

“It’s been so inspiring to learn from the Global Citizen Year Fellows,” says Stephanie Lo, “to hear and see their commitment to communities around the world. I’m hopeful that these fellowships will inspire students to think about how they can apply their technology interests to supporting others and am hopeful that this is a transformative experience.”

Educators are invited to nominate their students to apply to Global Citizen Year and the Tech for Good Fellowship by submitting this nomination form.

Students interested in the Tech for Good Scholarship can also apply directly on Global Citizen Year’s website.
